How to Trade-In a Car

car key and money

There are many benefits to trading in a car, with one major benefit being that you can field many offers without having to become a private party seller. Whether you’re a first-time trade-in customer or an experienced trader in the Providence and Warwick area, follow these steps and helpful tips to help you get the most out of your trade-in. Learn how to trade in your car with First Acura.

Get Your Trade-In Car’s Value

To get an accurate look at your vehicle’s trade-in value, you need to know its worth. This can be assessed by using our simple trade-in tool. Simply submit your car’s year, make, and model, along with your name, email, and phone number, and then you’ll be sent a full report of your vehicle’s local market supply, popularity, and the estimated value of your car. Drivers have also done this through other reliable sources such as Kelley Blue Book® Value and Edmunds True Market Value®.

Get an Appraisal

Drivers should next have their vehicle appraised by making an appointment at CarMax and/or with First Acura. Drivers can find CarMax locations near the Cranston and Attleboro area, and they will complete a detailed car inspection that’s valid for a week. If you choose to get an appraisal at First Acura, our experts will examine the car’s condition and take our inventory into consideration when determining if we can sell the car. Drivers who visit a CarMax and get an appraisal with us can bring in the CarMax appraisal for us to compare.

Negotiate or Accept a Trade-In Offer

Once appraisals are done, drivers can negotiate and accept the terms, close the deal, sign the paperwork, and head home in a new Acura. When you make a decision you can also choose to finalize the trade-in for cash or put the car’s value toward your new purchase. Choosing the highest offer may seem obvious, but there are a few trade-in tips to keep in mind:

  • You can’t negotiate with CarMax. Once they give you a trade-in amount, it can’t be increased. There’s usually some room to negotiate at a dealership.
  • If you’re upside down on your auto loans and wish to consolidate what you owe with the price of your new car, you’ll have better luck at a dealership. CarMax will expect the difference between what’s owed on your car loan and the car’s worth.
